two iowa police officers are dead and a suspect is in custody tonight -- after an early- morning ambush of the officers as they sat in their patrol cars while on duty. i'm ron steele. and i'm amanda goodman -- the first of two attacks happened at one- that's when an urbandale officer was found fatally shot near urbandale high school. about 20 minutes later -- and two miles away -- a des moines officer was also found dead in his patrol car from a gunshot wound in des moines. around nine-15 this morning -- the suspect turning himself in without incident when he flagged an officer down as he walked along a rural road in redfield. his name is scott greene. urbandale police say the

served jail time. the victims -- urbandale officer justin martin and sergeant tony beminio -- of the des moines police department. the murders--shocking the two communities-- who have been showing their support of both the urbandale and des moines police departments all day-- kwwl's kristin rogers in des moines today---she joins us live--kristin? you mentioned the support-- here and seeinig the number of people bringing the officers--water, snacks or dropping flowers off at one of the memorials-- the somberness of the community-- is easy to feel--and its easy to see. these scenes--an officers worst nightmere-- hitting the communities of urbandale and des moines of this like happening in our country lately but i didn't ever realize it would happen like in our community." the scene where officer martin was killed--sits

one thing that is easy to see here is the community support. i'm told--they are tight knit-- and will lean on eachother to get through this most horrific time. in des moines--kristin rogers--news 7...kwwl greene had previous run-ins with police in and around des moines -- including an encounter the suspect captured on video after he was asked to leave a high sir, we're asking you to leave have i committed a crime we're asking you to leave been recorded sir you're on private property, you're on school property you're causing a disturbance in the stands this video coming from greene's youtube account -- police say he was waving a confederate flag during the national anthem and towards other people who are minorities at the game. greene's

resisting arrest charge in 20-14 after officers tried patting him down for a weapon. he was accused of threatening to kill another man after a fight in a parking lot that year. police departments across the country taking time to honor these two fallen officers. but right here- local officers are feeling the tragedy hitting too close to home. kwwl's elizabeth amanieh is live at the waterloo police department. elizabeth. even in light of tragedy-you today to show their support for not only those two that they lost. but for the job they do-every day. everywhere you look-there are reminders of support. flags at half staff right outside the black hawk county sheriffs office in memory of their brothers. waterloo police officers wearing mourning bands on their badges. and small gestures like a box of cupcakes-with a big message-we

family, and we recognize when one suffers, we all suffer. we recognize that because of the job we have to do, how tight nit this organization has to be." making the best effort to stay strong. sheriff tony thompson telling me the magnitude this tragedy has on their already difficult job-is far too much to comprehend. live in waterloo, elizabeth chief trelka says he plans on sending several waterloo officers to the funerals for the fallen officer. we're learning more about the officers, the victims of today's senseless shootings. both killed while just sitting in their police cars. kwwl's nikki newbrough live in the studio with more. nikki? the urbandale and des moines police departments are trying to figure out how to move forward without two of their officers. these

sergent tony beminio has been with the des moines police department for 11 years. he was 39 years old. people with the des moines police department say he was a good police officer and a family man he leaves behind a wife, two sons, and a daughter. officer justin martin was only 24 years old and leaves behind his parents. he had been with the urbandale police department for only a year. both officers were loved by a fmaily member that's only way jsut as if you lost someone close to you these were our friends, our coworkers... during that news conference this morning, both departments saying

there were any warnings or fear that anything was wrong last night before the shootings. live in the studio nikki newbrough news seven kwwl. an outpouring of support are coming in from iowa's leaders following the tragedy. governor terry branstad releasing a statement, reading in part quote: "earlier this morning, like iowans across our state, i woke to the tragic news of the horrific murders of sargeant beminio and officer martin. i struggle to fully express the sorrow and sadness i feel for the departments, and their communities. the thoughts and prayers of chris and i go out to the families of these officers and to those who served beside them." president obama also releasing a statement this afternoon. the statement reads, in part, quote: "as we once again mourn american police officers lost in the line of duty, we must also renew the call to match that same sense of service, that same devotion within our own lives and our own communities.

business owner and republican candidate bonnie sadler serves on the iowa alliance in homecare board -- says she brings a background in health care and business to the table. "i feel like i have a good understanding of how the system works, and where the patient best wants to be. they home, and it's the most cost effective." but firefighter, navy veteran jeff danielson says "we have to improve in iowa, and we need a comprehensive plan for mental health services." supports infrastructure improvements like new roads and bridges to help grow the economy. "but also, we need to work on a skilled workforce. iowa is in a war for talent not only here in keep up with the modern workplace, we'll be just fine." whereas sadler says the current tax code needs simplified to attract new business.
